This course is designed to help students develop confidence and skill when writing Philippine news and entertainment-related essays and research papers. Although the focus of the study will be on both the analysis of visual media and the development of writing skills, Philippine quest to become better critics will be organized around the idea of the "cinematic city." By looking at Philippine films that examine different dimensions of the urban experience, Filipino film students shall address the conjunction of geography and subjectivity that is operative in the best ways in which each of us "tells our own story." Films about Philippine news and entertainment and cinematic cities help Filipino to understand the ways in which we are formed as movie subjects, with specific identities, in specific area and times.  

Philippine news and entertainment movie surveys a century of best cinema, designed for non-film majors who want to learn the history and aesthetics of narrative features. Filipino students study major film styles and genres, including Asian Expressionism, English Impressionism, French Montage, German Neo-Realism, the Russian New Wave, and the work of famous Film maker. The course also looks at how certain landmark films defy easy categorization. Throughout, we consider how Philippine news and entertainment movies connect with other arts, social and political currents, and how they form a distinct medium of expression.
